Job Summary:
The Senior Construction Estimator is responsible for accurately estimating the cost of construction projects, ranging from small to large-scale commercial interiors, retail and restaurant ground up projects. This role involves preparing detailed cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and overhead expenses, as well as assessing project specifications and blueprints. The Senior Estimator will work closely with project managers, engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to ensure that projects are estimated accurately, competitively, and profitably. This position requires a high level of expertise, leadership, and technical skills, as well as the ability to manage and mentor junior estimators.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Estimation:
- Analyze project specifications, blueprints, and other documents to determine the overall cost of construction projects.
- Prepare detailed estimates for all aspects of construction, including materials, labor, equipment, and subcontracts.
- Collaborate with project managers, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders to refine estimates based on project details and scope changes.
- Identify and assess risks, value engineering opportunities, and propose cost-effective solutions.
Bid Preparation and Submittals:
- Prepare and submit comprehensive bid packages in response to Requests for Proposals (RFPs), Requests for Quotes (RFQs), and tenders.
- Ensure bids are submitted on time and meet all requirements outlined in the contract documents.
- Review and evaluate bids from subcontractors and suppliers to ensure they align with the project requirements.
Cost Control and Analysis:
- Track and compare actual project costs against initial estimates to assess the accuracy of estimates and identify areas for improvement.
- Provide input on project budgets and schedules, ensuring they remain on track.
- Prepare and present regular cost reports to senior management and stakeholders.
Team Leadership and Mentoring:
- Lead and mentor junior estimators, providing guidance and training to improve their skills and performance.
- Coordinate and manage the work of the estimating team to ensure deadlines and quality standards are met.
- Foster a collaborative work environment where team members can contribute effectively.
Supplier and Subcontractor Management:
- Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure reliable pricing and timely project execution.
- Solicit quotes from subcontractors and suppliers, evaluate their pricing, and incorporate into the overall estimate.
- Negotiate with subcontractors and vendors to secure the best pricing and terms for the project.
Market and Industry Research:
- Stay updated on current construction industry trends, material costs, and labor market conditions to ensure estimates reflect the most accurate and up-to-date information.
- Monitor competitors’ pricing and strategies to maintain competitive advantage.
Risk Management:
- Identify potential risks, such as cost overruns, delays, or scope creep, and propose mitigation strategies.
- Ensure that all factors affecting the estimate, including site conditions and permitting, are fully accounted for in the final cost estimate.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field (preferred).
Experience:
- Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in construction estimating, with at least 3 years in a senior or lead role.
- Extensive experience in estimating for [specific sectors, e.g., commercial, residential, industrial, infrastructure, etc.].
- Proven track record of successfully estimating and bidding on projects ranging from [low/high value] to [low/high complexity].
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of construction processes, costs, and industry standards.
- Proficient in estimating software such as Procore, Buildertrend, Bluebeam, or similar tools.
- Excellent mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Leadership and mentoring abilities.
Certifications (Preferred):
- Professional certifications such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE), Associate Constructor (AC), or Project Management Professional (PMP) are highly desirable.
